In fashion, a runway, catwalk or ramp is a narrow, usually flat platform that runs into an auditorium or between sections of an outdoor seating area, used by models to demonstrate clothing and accessories during a fashion show.

Don’t hang or droop your head; act like you have an invisible string attached at the top of your head holding you up because then you will be above the audience on the catwalk, keeping your chin facing slightly down will let the audience see more of your face. Additionally, keeping your chin slightly tilted down will add angle to your face and will help lend you a little bit of attitude

You don’t want to distract from the clothes you are wearing with a smile. Look in the mirror and try to hold your mouth naturally to see how it looks and feels. Ask someone else how your facial expressions look. Sometimes other people will be able to see things that you don’t notice.

  • For example, ask your friend “Do I look fierce?”.
  • If your lips slightly part naturally, you don’t have to force your lips closed.

One of the most iconic haircuts to have ever graced men’s heads, the quiff has been big (and big news) since the 1950s, earning it a place in the follicular hall of fame alongside other icons of the barber’s chair including the French crop, buzz cut and short back and sides .

Splicing together elements of the pompadour, flat top and sometimes even the mohawk, unafraid to make its voluminous presence felt, the amped-up quiff suits a wide range of ages, face shapes and personal styles.

FASHION AND IT FEATURE

Fashion design is a form of art dedicated to the creation of clothing and other lifestyle accessories. Modern fashion design is divided into two basic categories: haute couture and ready-to-wear. The haute couture collection is dedicated to certain customers and is custom sized to fit these customers exactly. In order to qualify as a haute couture house, a designer has to be part of the Syndical Chamber for Haute Couture and show a new collection twice a year presenting a minimum of 35 different outfits each time.

Ready-to-wear collections are standard sized, not custom made, so they are more suitable for large production runs. They are also split into two categories: designer/createur and confection collections. Designer collections have a higher quality and finish as well as an unique design. They often represent a certain philosophy and are created to make a statement rather than for sale. Both ready-to-wear and haute-couture collections are presented on international catwalks.

Who Invented It?

The first fashion designer who was more than a simple seamster was Charles Frederick Worth, in the 19th century. Before he set up his fashion design house in Paris, clothing was made by anonymous dressmakers and fashion standards were derived from the styles worn by royalty. Worth was the first designer to actually dictate to his customers what to wear rather than following their demands.

His fashion house became so famous that people were able to attach a face and a name to designs when they knew they were from the House of Worth. This was the beginning of the tradition to have a designer of a house not only create clothing, but also represent the symbol of the brand.

What Does It Take To Be A Fashion Designer?

Fashion design is a form of art. To work as a designer, you should have an artistic and creative personality. You also have to be good at drawing and able to express your ideas in sketches. You don’t necessarily have to be a great artist, but you must have some special skills for combining colors, tones and shades. You also have to be able to work with fabric and use textiles in a creative and original manner. Fashion designers have a good visual imagination and are able to think in three-dimensions and put their ideas into garments.

Ashish-N-Soni

Fashion designers have to be aware of the fashion market requirements. They have to be very interested in learning new things and read magazines, journals and books on fashion design history and new trends. They also have to be interested in art, visit art galleries and interact with all kinds of artists whenever they have the opportunity. A designer should also have some knowledge and experience of tailoring (cutting, draping, sewing etc.) and be able to tell the difference between different fabric quality levels.

A good understanding of the audience’s lifestyle and customer needs and requirements is also needed in fashion design. Designers should have good communication skills and be able to express their ideas clearly. But most important, they have to be very original and have fresh, innovative ideas.

MENSWEAR ITEMS THAT GET BETTER WITH AGE

BetterwAge

t’s good to be a man.

After all, it’s a man’s world (although it would be nothing without a woman or a girl).

The best part is, if we stay healthy and well spirited we can get more attractive with age. Grey hair, wrinkles, rough experienced hands…all things that are often considered sexy as we ease into our mature years.

Naturally, menswear follows a similar pattern. As men we don’t need to shop for the latest trends, or re-invent our style based on the current season. Instead, we can invest in staple pieces and wear them for years – sometimes decades – and they only get better as they take on their own worn-in character and “experience wrinkles”.

Not everything looks more attractive with wear & tear, but here are some items that certainly do (in my opinion, as always).

RAW DENIM

004

These are Alex’s jeans. They were dark indigo blue (almost black) when he first bought them five years ago, now they have all kinds of cool whiskering. You can see where he keeps his Iphone…which is not only a conversation starter but also a representation of his character – because if you know Alex, you know he stays close to his Iphone, and his Reddit community.

LEATHER JACKETS

007

I bought this jacket in a vintage store in Montreal. I almost didn’t drop the $250 on it, but I’m so glad I did; it’s become one of my favorite pieces. It’s not a typical calf or lamb skin, this thing is cut from hardcore belting leather. It was probably stiff as a board when it was new. To my unborn son: this will be yours one day, when you pry it from my cold dead hands.

RUGGED BOOTS

009

These are combat boots from the 1960s. Just looking at them makes me daydream about the men who wore them, and what heroic things that were doing with them laced halfway up the shins.

WORKWEAR “CHORE” JACKETS

013

This is my father’s old shop coat from his 30+ years working at the Chrysler plant in Windsor Ontario. It has sentimental value to me as it truly represents my father – the hardest working man I’ve ever known and a daily inspiration to his three sons.

LEATHER (OR CANVAS) LUGGAGE

016

Why drop $800 on a handmade duffle bag from a craftsman like Frank Clegg? 1) Because you’re supporting an American doing world-class work 2) Because you’ll never have to buy another one in your lifetime – which will ultimately save you money in the long run

DENIM SHIRTS (OR JACKETS)

002

This one is kind of cheating, but I love the concept and wanted to share it. Sarah and Cody of Totally Blown in Joshua Tree California are taking a unique approach to apparel design. They source USA-made vintage clothing and creatively destroy it using unusual methods. This vintage denim shirt, for example, was dyed, bleached and put on a mannequin in front of a firing squad that riddled it with hundreds of gun shots. That’s not pilling you see, those are tiny bullet holes.

CANVAS SNEAKERS

019

Canvas sneakers like Chuck Taylors and Vans look kinda cheesy brand new. So don’t baby them, or clean them… My homie ShoScott, born and raised downtown NYC, takes it a step further. He collects Jordans but can’t stand them looking too new. The first time he puts on a fresh pair he literally steps all over them – right foot stomping left, left foot stomping right. It’s a fascinating thing to watch, considering their price tag and the psychology behind not wanting to have the ever-sought-after “Fresh Js”.

The Big Idea:

Shimon: “We always had it in our minds that we might somehow go into clothing—our family business was children’s wear—and around 2009, we saw a need in the market for the vision that we had. We thought, Let’s make a few shirts, a few pants, a few different things, and it ended up turning into a full collection. We had no idea what we were doing because we never worked anywhere and we’d never trained. The first few years we didn’t really understand how things worked—the logistics, running a business, being a designer, having a mindset of how to not only build a brand but to build a business. It took us at least four or five seasons to figure it that out.”

Biggest Challenge So Far:

Shimon: “The challenge was always: I want to make something. What do I do? We had to learn everything the hard way.”

A Great Day in Men’s Wear

landscape-1439502892-finallandscape

Ralph Lauren started out selling ties from a drawer. Calvin Klein began with an idea for women’s coats. Michael Kors was a part-time window dresser. For each man to get where he was going, there were gatekeepers and tastemakers, moneymen and middlemen, all of whom wanted a cut and/or some credit for their respective roles in making the designing, creating, and selling of clothes really, really hard. It’s still hard today. It remains a grind. But thanks to a once-in-a-generation confluence of factors—low, low interest rates for seed capital; new manufacturing models that bypass middlemen; direct paths to consumers through e-commerce and social media; and a surge in demand as men stock their closets as never before—a new generation of men’s-wear leaders has emerged to show us new ways of buying and wearing clothes. Some are designers with bold and insistent visions for how men today should dress. Some are entrepreneurs with novel ideas about supply chains and retail models. Some are simply guys who didn’t like the job they had before and couldn’t quit wondering why khakis didn’t fit better or why dress shoes had to be so damn expensive. Together they’re the future, and they’ll be helping men look their best in the years and decades to come.
